Rollout: Starting August 24, 2026, we'll be gradually rolling this out to all accounts. No action needed on your end.
BuildOps now lets you set a default valuation method for new inventory items. This helps your team follow your company’s costing practices without selecting the same valuation method every time an item is created.
The default is optional, can be changed for individual items, and will not change the valuation method on existing inventory items.
What’s New
A new Default Valuation Method setting is available in Inventory Settings. You can choose from:
Average
Standard
FIFO (First-In, First-Out)
LIFO (Last-In, First-Out)
Once a default is selected:
New inventory items automatically use the selected valuation method.
Users can change the valuation method for an individual item when creating it.
During CSV or imports requests, the company default is used when a row does not include a valuation method. A valuation method entered directly in the import file takes precedence.
Existing inventory items keep their current valuation method, even if the company default changes.
If no default is configured, new inventory items continue to use Standard as the fallback valuation method.
How to Get Started
Open Inventory Settings.
Select the valuation method your company wants to use by default for new inventory items.
Save your changes.
Create a new inventory item to confirm that the Valuation Method field is preselected.
The setting is available to users who already have permission to edit Inventory Settings. Users who can create inventory items can override the default for individual items.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Will this change existing inventory items?
A: No. Changing the default applies only to new inventory items and future imports where a valuation method is not provided. Existing items keep their current valuation method.
Q: Can I use a different valuation method for a specific item?
A: Yes. The preselected value can be changed on the New Inventory Item form before you save the item.
Q: What happens if I do not configure a default?
New inventory items continue to use Standard as the fallback valuation method.
Q: Will the default be used for CSV imports?
A: Yes. If an imported row does not specify a valuation method, BuildOps applies the company default. If the row includes a valuation method, that value is used instead.
Q: Do I need to request access or enable anything?
A: No additional action is required to receive the update. The feature will roll out progressively beginning August 24, 2026. Once it is available for your company, the new setting will appear automatically in Inventory Settings.
